The Spiders Most Often Getting Into Ontario Homes

Not all spider infestations look the same. The species determines where they're coming from, what's attracting them, and how targeted the treatment needs to be.

Cellar spider - common house spider found in Ontario corners and basements
Most Common

House & Cellar Spiders

The tangled-web spiders you find in corners, basements, and window frames. They're persistent colonizers - low light, high humidity zones indoors attract them year-round. A treated exterior perimeter eliminates the primary entry vector.

Wolf spider - large ground-hunting spider common in Ontario homes in late summer
Most Alarming

Wolf Spiders

Fast-moving ground hunters that don't spin webs. Wolf spiders enter through foundation gaps and door thresholds in late summer and fall while searching for prey and shelter. Large size (up to 30 mm) makes encounters unsettling even though they're harmless.

Jumping & Sac Spiders

Active hunters that move through wall cracks, window tracks, and door seals. Yellow sac spiders in particular tend to appear on walls and ceilings in fall. Both species are effectively controlled by the exterior perimeter barrier.

How Spider Control Works

Our treatment strategy addresses spiders where they enter and harbour - the exterior of the building - rather than chasing them indoors after the fact.

Step 1 - Full Foundation Perimeter

We apply our professional-grade treatment along the entire foundation line, covering the lower 2–3 feet of exterior wall and 1–2 feet of adjacent ground. Any spider crossing this zone to reach a wall or entry point contacts the active ingredient.

Step 2 - Eaves, Soffits & Upper Perimeter

Orb weavers and web-building spiders concentrate at eaves, soffit vents, and porch ceilings. We extend the treatment upward to address these high-traffic zones, which are responsible for most of the visible webs on the exterior.

Step 3 - Window Frames, Door Frames & Entry Points

Gaps around window sills, door thresholds, weep holes, pipe penetrations, and utility entries are the primary indoor access routes for wolf spiders, house spiders, and sac spiders. These points receive focused application.

Step 4 - our licensed treatment product Residual Barrier

our licensed treatment product is a professional bifenthrin suspension concentrate formulated for extended outdoor residency. The micro-encapsulated formulation bonds to exterior surfaces and remains effective for weeks, resisting UV exposure, rain, and irrigation without washing off or breaking down rapidly.

Web Cleanout Add-On: We can physically remove existing webs before or after treatment, giving you a clean baseline. Any new webs that appear post-treatment are immediately visible - and their absence confirms the barrier is working. Ask about web cleanout when booking.

Spider Activity Calendar - Ontario

Spiders are active year-round at some level, but entry pressure peaks predictably each year. Timing your treatment around these windows maximizes effectiveness.

Apr
Overwintering spiders become active again
May–Jun
Juvenile spiders dispersing from egg sacs
Jul
Full activity; orb weavers at eaves begin
Aug–Sep
⚠ PEAK - adults at maximum size, seeking entry
Oct
Wolf spiders and house spiders move indoors
Nov–Mar
Reduced exterior activity; overwinter in cracks

The most effective treatment windows are late May to June (before populations peak) and late August (at peak pressure, before indoor migration begins). An annual plan puts you on both windows automatically.

Store-bought products are formulated for indoor use or short outdoor exposure. Exterior surfaces break down active ingredients within days. Professional-grade formulations like our licensed treatment product are engineered to stay on rough masonry, painted wood, and porous surfaces for the long term.

Before Your Treatment

There's no prep required for a standard exterior treatment. However, a few simple steps in the days before your appointment maximize results:

🌿 Clear Vegetation Contact

Shrubs, vines, or branches touching the exterior wall create bridges past the treated zone. Trimming them back 6–12 inches before your appointment prevents spiders from bypassing the barrier entirely.

🚲 Move Deck Furniture & Stored Items

Patio furniture, firewood, storage bins, and garden equipment stored against the house give spiders harbouring sites directly adjacent to entry points. Moving them outward 2 feet lets the technician treat the full foundation zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a spider treatment last?
our licensed treatment product provides 30–90 days of residual control depending on weather exposure and surface type. Smooth painted surfaces retain the barrier longest. Most customers book a spring and a late-summer treatment for continuous season-long coverage.
Do I need to be home during the treatment?
No. Spider treatment is entirely exterior. You don't need to be home, clear the interior, or change any indoor routines. We work around the outside of the building only.
Is the treatment safe for kids and pets?
Yes. Once treated surfaces are dry - typically 30–60 minutes after application - the area is safe for children and pets. We use our licensed treatment product, a professional residual insecticide registered for residential use in Canada.
How quickly will I see results?
Spiders contacting the treated surface are affected within hours. You may see occasional spiders crossing from untreated areas in the first 24–48 hours. Web activity typically drops significantly within one week of treatment.
Do you treat inside the home?
Standard treatment is exterior-only, which resolves the vast majority of infestations. If spiders have established populations inside - particularly in basements or crawl spaces - interior spot treatment can be added on request.
Can I combine spider and ant treatment in one visit?
Yes. Both treatments target the same exterior perimeter zones and can be combined in a single visit. Many clients book a spider + ant package for complete foundation-level pest protection in one appointment.
