Spider Identification Guide
Jumping Spider Ontario
The most alert and visually sophisticated spider in Ontario. Jumping spiders hunt by sight during the day and are capable of leaping many times their own body length.

Jumping spiders are the most charismatic spider in Ontario. Unlike most spiders that flee or freeze when detected, jumping spiders will turn to face you - tracking your movement with their large, forward-facing principal eyes. They appear genuinely curious, which is why they are the spider most likely to make someone say "actually, that one is kind of cute."
The Salticidae family contains over 6,000 species worldwide and is the largest spider family. Ontario is home to several dozen jumping spider species. They are the hunters of the spider world - active during the day, using exceptional eyesight to stalk and pounce on prey rather than building webs to trap it.
A jumping spider can leap 10 to 50 times its own body length, using hydraulic pressure in its legs rather than large muscles. Before jumping, it attaches a silk safety line to its starting point. If the jump misses, it can climb back up the line and try again.
In Ontario
Jumping spiders are active across Southern Ontario from spring through fall. They are outdoor and window-adjacent spiders - far more likely to be seen on exterior walls, sunny window frames, garden plants, and fence posts than deep inside a home. Their daytime activity and preference for well-lit areas means they are often spotted rather than hidden.
In fall, jumping spiders may enter homes seeking overwinter sites, typically found in window frames, curtain folds, and warm sunny areas near glass. They are one of the species most likely to be spotted on a bedroom window in September or October.
Jumping spiders have the most acute vision of any spider. Their principal (front-facing) eyes can resolve images comparable to animals much larger than them. They can track and identify prey from up to 30cm away. Males of many species perform elaborate visual courtship dances using their coloured markings and iridescent chelicerae to attract females.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are jumping spiders dangerous?
No. Jumping spiders are not dangerous to humans. They can bite if handled roughly, but bites are uncommon and cause only brief, mild irritation. They are not aggressive and will typically flee or drop when approached by a human, despite their tendency to turn and look at you.
Why is the jumping spider staring at me?
Jumping spiders have extraordinary vision and are genuinely curious about moving objects in their environment - including you. Their large forward-facing eyes give them excellent depth perception, and they track movement instinctively. It is not aggressive behaviour; they are assessing whether you are a threat, prey, or potential mate.
Are jumping spiders beneficial?
Yes. Jumping spiders prey on a wide variety of insects including mosquitoes, flies, and small moths. Some species specifically prey on mosquitoes that carry diseases. They are efficient hunters and a genuine asset in a garden. Their presence indoors, however, is still a sign of accessible entry points and sufficient insect activity to sustain them.
How do jumping spiders get into my house?
Jumping spiders enter through gaps around window frames, door frames, and any unsealed opening in the exterior envelope. They are drawn to light and warmth and commonly enter through window gaps in fall. Sealing these gaps and applying a perimeter barrier treatment reduces their entry significantly.
What is the difference between a jumping spider and a wolf spider?
Both hunt without webs, but they are quite different. Wolf spiders are much larger (up to 35mm body length vs 4-18mm for jumping spiders), ground-hunting, and mostly nocturnal. Jumping spiders are small, daytime hunters, and are recognized by their large front-facing eyes, compact stocky build, and distinctive jumping behaviour. If it is on the floor at night, it is likely a wolf spider. If it is on the window in daylight looking at you, it is likely a jumping spider.
