The Niagara Region's combination of Lake Ontario shoreline, the Niagara Escarpment, and a dense corridor of fruit orchards and vineyards creates conditions that support a large and persistent spider population. Waterfront and shoreline properties along Lake Ontario, from Grimsby Beach west to Fort Erie, frequently see dock spiders and fishing spiders establishing webs along seawalls, under docks, and inside boathouses. Seasonal cottage properties that sit unoccupied through winter commonly experience significant web buildup by the time owners return in spring.
