Invasive Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus)
Niagara Region Public Health has detected the first Asian Tiger Mosquito in Lincoln, Ont. Unlike native species, these invasive pests are aggressive daytime biters. Learn about the threat and how Yard Shield™ can protect your property.
On August 18, 2026, Niagara Region Public Health announced the detection of a single Aedes albopictus (Asian Tiger Mosquito) in Lincoln, Ontario. Although this specific specimen tested negative for any mosquito-borne viruses, this invasive species is a known vector for dangerous viral infections, including West Nile, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. The most striking difference from native species is their behavior: they are aggressive daytime biters.
The Asian Tiger Mosquito gets its name from the distinctive black and white stripes on its body and legs. Originally native to Southeast Asia, this species has been expanding its range globally through international trade and warming temperatures.
Unlike native Ontario mosquitoes that rest during the day and hunt at dusk or dawn, Tiger mosquitoes are highly active and aggressive in broad daylight. They do not hide from the sun, meaning they will bite continuously while you are gardening, playing, or relaxing in your yard during the afternoon.
While the specimen captured in Lincoln tested negative, the establishment of this species is a concern because they are efficient vectors for transmitting tropical diseases. Proactive control is crucial to prevent these mosquitoes from establishing a permanent foothold in local neighborhoods.
Because Tiger mosquitoes bite during the day, standard outdoor routines are severely disrupted. Our specialized Yard Shield™ treatment program is designed to establish an active barrier to keep them off your property.
We treat the undersides of leaves and deep within dense shrubs where Tiger mosquitoes congregate during peak midday heat. This eliminates adult populations at their resting sites.
We apply treatments under deck skirts, around patios, and near pergolas. By securing the perimeters of your active outdoor living spaces, we dramatically reduce biting pressure where you sit.
Tiger mosquitoes have a short flight range (~50m). By treating property lines, fences, and transition boundaries, we block invaders coming from neighboring yards or public areas.
Environmentally Mindful Application: We avoid actively blooming flowers and vegetable gardens to protect bees and other essential pollinators. We target only the vegetative structure and non-blooming resting areas.

Eliminating breeding sites is just as important as chemical barriers. Tiger mosquitoes can breed in as little standing water as a bottle cap. Niagara Region Public Health urges residents to take the following steps:
| Action Area | What to Do | Prevention Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Standing Water | Empty bird baths, plant pots, tarps, toys, and tires every 2–3 days. | Critical - Stops local egg laying |
| Eavestroughs & Gutters | Ensure gutters are cleaned, clear of leaves, and draining properly. | High - Removes hidden breeding pools |
| Screens & Seals | Check window/door screens for tears and ensure they fit tightly. | High - Keeps daytime biters outdoors |
| Personal Repellents | Use Health Canada-approved repellent containing DEET or Icaridin. | Personal Protection |
| Clothing Choice | Wear long-sleeved, loose, and light-coloured clothing when outdoors. | Personal Protection |
