Haldimand County follows the Grand River from north of Caledonia south to Lake Erie at Dunnville, with a landscape that is predominantly agricultural — cash crops, tender fruit operations, and cattle pasture. Field spiders migrate toward residential structures each fall as crops are harvested, and properties at the edge of cultivated fields see the most significant intrusions.

Dunnville's proximity to Lake Erie and the Grand River estuary introduces an additional species: the fishing spider, which nests along riverbanks, dock pilings, and in boathouses on the Grand River. These spiders are large and visible but are not venomous to humans. Riparian properties along the Grand are most affected, particularly those with unscreened access points at water level.

Caledonia, Cayuga, and Hagersville sit in the interior of the county away from major water bodies, but their older housing stock — much of it pre-1960 with stone or concrete block foundations — provides ample harborage. Properties surrounded by windbreak hedgerows, common on rural lots, see particularly high populations of orb-weaving spiders that string large webs between shrubs and structures.
