## Spider Pressure in Simcoe County

Simcoe County is a large, geographically diverse county spanning from suburban Bradford in the south to Georgian Bay shoreline in the north. Pest pressure varies dramatically across this range.

**Barrie:** Simcoe County's largest city, situated on Kempenfelt Bay (Lake Simcoe). Urban residential with consistent house spider and cellar spider activity in typical suburban housing. Lake Simcoe shoreline properties have dock spider and mosquito pressure. Properties in Barrie's northwest near the Holland Marsh watershed edge have higher mosquito activity.

**Innisfil and Bradford West Gwillimbury:** Growing suburban communities south of Barrie. Bradford/Holland Marsh area — the Holland Marsh is one of Ontario's most significant agricultural areas and also one of the most significant mosquito production zones in southern Ontario due to extensive drainage ditches, low-lying fields, and organic soil moisture. Properties near the Marsh have high mosquito pressure. Bradford is also a high-density new-build area with associated wolf spider pressure.

**Wasaga Beach:** Ontario's busiest freshwater beach community on Georgian Bay. Seasonal resort atmosphere with high mosquito pressure from the Nottawasaga River floodplain and wetlands adjacent to the beach area. Wasaga Beach waterfront and cottage properties have dock spider activity.

**Collingwood and the Blue Mountains:** Year-round and seasonal resort community. Ski hill and Georgian Bay proximity drives waterfront and wooded property pest pressure. Properties adjacent to the Niagara Escarpment in this area have tick pressure — blacklegged ticks are established in Grey-Bruce and portions of the Blue Mountains / Collingwood Escarpment area.

**Midland and Penetanguishene:** Georgian Bay waterfront communities. Significant mosquito pressure from the Tay Marsh and waterfront wetlands. Dock spider activity at waterfront properties on Georgian Bay. The Wye Marsh in Midland is adjacent to residential areas and contributes to mosquito pressure.

**Orillia:** Lake Simcoe / Lake Couchiching junction. Waterfront property dock spider and mosquito activity. Properties near the Couchiching shoreline and surrounding rural areas.

**Tiny Township:** Georgian Bay shoreline with extensive waterfront cottage properties. High dock spider activity, significant mosquito pressure, and tick presence in the wooded areas along the bay.

## Tick Presence in Simcoe County

Simcoe County Public Health has documented blacklegged tick populations across the county, with particularly active surveillance in the wooded areas north and west of Barrie, the Blue Mountains / Collingwood Escarpment, and Tiny and Tay Township Georgian Bay areas. Lyme disease risk is above provincial average in the northern and Escarpment-adjacent portions of the county.
