## Spider Pressure in Peel Region

Peel Region covers a broad range of environments — from dense urban Mississauga to rapidly growing Brampton to rural estate Caledon — each with distinct pest pressure characteristics.

**Mississauga:** Peel's largest city combines mature lakefront communities in the south (Port Credit, Lakeview, Clarkson) with established mid-city residential areas (Erin Mills, Meadowvale, Hurontario) and some remaining rural-edge properties in the northwest. Older housing stock in south Mississauga — particularly below Dundas — has consistent cellar spider and house spider activity in aging basements. Credit River ravine properties in west Mississauga and Erin Mills have elevated insect and spider activity.

**Brampton:** One of Canada's fastest-growing cities, with major new construction activity across the northwest. Active development sites displace ground-dwelling spiders into adjacent established properties. Wolf spider pressure is high in new-build subdivisions. Older Brampton neighbourhoods (downtown, Bramalea) have consistent interior spider pressure consistent with 1960s-1990s housing stock.

**Caledon:** Rural municipality with estate properties, farms, and conservation-adjacent land. Caledon represents the highest pest pressure in Peel Region:
- Mosquito pressure from Credit River headwaters, tributaries, farm ponds, and wetland features
- Tick pressure from Oak Ridges Moraine (runs through eastern and northern Caledon) — blacklegged ticks are established in this zone
- Higher spider pressure from agricultural adjacency and undisturbed land adjacent to residences

Credit River Valley properties throughout Caledon have elevated mosquito and tick risk.

## Credit River Corridor

The Credit River runs from Orangeville south through Caledon, Brampton, and Mississauga to Lake Ontario. Properties adjacent to the Credit River or its tributaries experience elevated mosquito pressure along the corridor, particularly in Caledon and northwest Brampton where the river corridor is broader and more natural.

## Tick Presence in Peel

Blacklegged ticks are confirmed in Peel Region, with the highest density in Caledon and the Oak Ridges Moraine portions of northern Brampton (above Mayfield Road). Peel Public Health monitors tick populations and advises residents on protective measures. Tick treatment is relevant for all Caledon properties and Brampton properties adjacent to conservation lands or the moraine boundary.
