## Pest Pressure in Haldimand County

Haldimand County is a largely rural and small-town county in southwest Ontario, bounded by the Grand River to the north, the Lake Erie shoreline to the south, and agricultural plains throughout. The combination of river, wetland, lake, and agricultural environments creates above-average pest pressure relative to urban Ontario.

**Grand River corridor:** The Grand River flows through the heart of Haldimand, with significant floodplain and wetland areas near Caledonia, Cayuga, and Dunnville. River floodplain and adjacent wetlands are productive mosquito habitat from spring through summer. Properties backing onto the Grand River or within a few hundred metres of the floodplain experience elevated mosquito pressure.

**Long Point adjacent:** Long Point Peninsula (Norfolk County) is immediately east of the Haldimand Lake Erie shoreline. Properties in Selkirk, Nanticoke, and the Haldimand Lake Erie corridor are near this tick hotspot. Blacklegged tick populations are established along this entire Lake Erie shoreline stretch. Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit monitors tick submissions from the area.

**Agricultural land:** The vast majority of Haldimand County is agricultural. Properties adjacent to crop fields — corn, soybeans, tobacco, vegetables — have elevated insect pressure (including aphids, beetles, and flies that spiders feed on). Spider populations on agricultural-adjacent residential properties are consistently higher than properties in established suburban areas.

**Caledonia:** The county's largest community, with mixed residential and commercial areas. Spider activity consistent with general small-town Ontario patterns — house spider and cellar spider in housing stock, higher pressure near the Grand River.

## Tick Presence in Haldimand

Blacklegged ticks are established along the Haldimand Lake Erie shoreline and in wooded areas near the Grand River. The proximity to Long Point — Ontario's most significant southern shoreline tick habitat — means tick risk in south Haldimand is meaningful and documented. Tick treatment is appropriate for any Haldimand property with wooded zones, brushy field edges, or shoreline adjacency.
