## Service Area

Spider Squad serves Grey County and Bruce County, including Owen Sound, Collingwood (shared with Simcoe), Meaford, Thornbury, The Blue Mountains, Hanover, Walkerton, Kincardine, Goderich (shared with Huron), Southampton, Port Elgin, Wiarton, Tobermory, and surrounding communities along the Georgian Bay and Lake Huron shorelines and the Niagara Escarpment corridor.

## Pest Pressure in Grey-Bruce

Grey-Bruce is a large, diverse area encompassing the Bruce Peninsula, Georgian Bay shoreline, Niagara Escarpment, and agricultural plains. It has some of the highest tick density in Ontario and significant mosquito and spider pressure throughout.

**Bruce Peninsula:** The Bruce Peninsula — from Wiarton north to Tobermory — is one of Ontario's highest-profile tick exposure zones. The combination of Carolinian and boreal forest transition, rocky terrain with leaf litter, and high deer population creates ideal blacklegged tick habitat. The Bruce Peninsula National Park border means extensive wildlife corridors. Anyone spending time on the Bruce — hiking, cottage use, trail walking — faces above-average tick exposure. Tick treatment for peninsula properties is strongly recommended.

**Wiarton and south peninsula:** The base of the peninsula has significant agricultural adjacency and rural residential properties. Tick pressure is documented throughout this zone. Mosquito pressure from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay coastal wetlands is seasonal.

**Owen Sound:** Georgian Bay city with established residential areas. The Sydenham River Valley creates a ravine-like ecological corridor through the city. Spider activity is consistent in Owen Sound housing stock, with elevated pressure near the escarpment forest edge.

**Meaford and Thornbury/Clarksburg:** Georgian Bay shoreline communities with a mix of year-round residential and cottage/seasonal properties. Niagara Escarpment properties have tick exposure. Waterfront properties on Georgian Bay have dock spider and mosquito pressure.

**Blue Mountains (Thornbury/Craigleith/Collingwood area):** Year-round and seasonal resort community at the base of the Escarpment. Ski resort and Georgian Bay proximity. Tick pressure from Escarpment woodland is present. This is a joint service area with the Simcoe County page.

**Lake Huron shoreline (Southampton, Port Elgin, Kincardine):** Shoreline communities with seasonal and year-round properties. Waterfront mosquito pressure from Lake Huron wetland edges and river mouths. Dock spider activity at waterfront structures.

**Hanover and Walkerton (interior Bruce/Grey):** Agricultural communities with higher general insect pressure from surrounding farmland. Spider pressure on properties adjacent to agriculture is above average.

## Tick Situation in Grey-Bruce

Grey-Bruce has among the highest documented blacklegged tick density in Ontario outside of Long Point Peninsula. Grey Bruce Health Unit actively monitors tick submissions and issues region-specific tick advisories. The Bruce Peninsula, the Escarpment corridor, and Georgian Bay coastal areas have confirmed Lyme disease-carrying tick populations.

Tick treatment is not precautionary in Grey-Bruce — it addresses a documented and significant risk. Treatment of perimeter zones and lawn-to-brush transitions is appropriate for any property in the region with wooded or naturalized adjacent land.
