# Garage Spiders — Spider Squad ## Why Garages Have More Spiders Than the Rest of the House Garages combine every factor that attracts and retains spiders: - Frequent entry and exit (doors open regularly, letting spiders and insects in and out) - Poor sealing (garage door gaps, gaps at the sides and floor of the door, gaps around side doors) - Stored items that provide harbouring sites (boxes, shelving, equipment, seasonal items) - Exterior-facing walls and ceiling that trap heat and provide web-building surfaces - Low human activity in certain zones (upper corners, behind shelving, under workbenches) - Insects attracted by lights left on, by garage contents, and by garage door gaps ## Common Garage Spiders in Ontario **House spider:** Most common. Tangled webs in upper corners, around shelving, along the ceiling, and behind stored items. Can accumulate significantly in undisturbed garages. **Wolf spider:** Enters through door gaps and the threshold of the main garage door. Ground-level hunter. Found behind boxes, under shelving, and at the perimeter of the floor. **Cellar spider:** Concentrated in the cooler, darker corners of attached garages, especially near the interior wall connecting to the house. **Orb weaver:** Builds webs on the exterior of garage doors, across the garage door opening when the door is up, in nearby shrubs and garden areas adjacent to the garage. ## Attached vs. Detached Garages **Attached garages:** Create a direct pathway from the exterior into the home. Spiders in an attached garage can migrate through the garage-to-house door (often poorly sealed) into the main living space. Treating the attached garage is part of comprehensive home spider control. **Detached garages:** Can be treated as a separate structure with its own perimeter application. Often requires add-on pricing if significant distance from the main home. ## Treatment The Spider Squad perimeter treatment covers garage structures when included in the scope: - Exterior garage door frame and threshold (key entry zone) - Foundation perimeter of the garage structure - Interior spot treatment of upper corners, shelving zones, and under-workbench areas (if added) For attached garages, the treatment typically includes the interior of the garage as part of a comprehensive home treatment. For detached garages, it's quoted as an add-on. ## Prevention in Garages - Install a proper garage door seal (bottom and sides) — this single step dramatically reduces insect and spider entry - Replace incandescent bulbs with yellow LED bulbs in exterior fixtures - Keep boxes on shelving units rather than on the floor, and store seasonal items in sealed plastic bins rather than cardboard boxes - Clear webs regularly — active web zones attract more spiders - Address moisture issues (groundwater intrusion, dripping vehicles, poor drainage) that support insect populations To book: call 905-935-7498 or request a quote at spidersquad.ca.
