West Lorne sits in the southwestern corner of Elgin County in a landscape of flat, intensive cash crop production. The community is small, with residential streets surrounded closely by active farmland and a rail corridor that has historically attracted a range of ground-dwelling invertebrates. Fall spider migration here is concentrated and predictable, occurring over a two to three week window in September as field crops are cleared.
The area's housing stock includes a range of ages, from original village-era homes with stone foundations to postwar bungalows and small newer builds. Older properties with unimproved foundations benefit most from perimeter treatment that seals the entry zone before fall migration begins. Detached garages and garden sheds adjacent to rear property lines facing farm fields are the most frequent first point of entry.
