Spider Control in Elgin County
Elgin County occupies the Lake Erie shoreline from Port Stanley west to Port Glasgow, with the inland areas dominated by grain, soy, and corn production. The sandy loam soils common across the county support high populations of wolf spiders, which are active hunters living at ground level and moving readily into structures when harvesting activity or rain events disturb ground cover.
St. Thomas, the county's largest city, has a significant inventory of pre-1960 homes with full basements, unfinished mechanical rooms, and window wells at grade. Cellar spiders and house spiders are consistent residents in these spaces year-round. Aylmer and Dutton, as smaller market towns, have similar housing characteristics with the added factor of grain storage and agricultural processing in close proximity.
Port Stanley's shoreline character brings dock and fishing spider activity to the Lake Erie-facing properties, while the bluffs and ravines above the beach area provide habitat for a wider range of web-building species. Properties directly on the lake often have exterior storage areas — under decks, in unheated outbuildings — that shelter spiders through winter without intervention.
