## Spider Pressure in Durham

Durham Region spans from the Lake Ontario shoreline north through Oak Ridges Moraine and rural agricultural communities. Pest pressure varies significantly between the urban south and the moraine/rural north.

**Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby, Pickering (urban lakefront):** Established suburban communities with mature residential neighbourhoods. House spider and cellar spider activity is consistent year-round. The ravine systems throughout Oshawa and Pickering — Farewell Creek, Harmony Creek, Duffins Creek — create natural corridors that concentrate spider and insect activity in adjacent properties. Orb weaver webs are prominent along ravine-adjacent properties in late summer.

**Clarington and Bowmanville:** Eastern Durham communities with significant agricultural adjacency and rural estate development. Higher mosquito and insect pressure near crop fields and drainage features. Spider pressure on agricultural-adjacent properties is higher than mid-suburban locations.

**Port Perry and Scugog:** Lake Scugog waterfront properties have dock spider pressure. The Scugog River and surrounding wetlands drive significant mosquito production. Tick pressure in the Scugog area is above average — the Oak Ridges Moraine forest corridor supports blacklegged tick populations that public health monitors regularly.

**Uxbridge:** Rural community in the Oak Ridges Moraine. One of Durham Region's highest tick-risk municipalities due to the combination of moraine forest, trail systems (Uxbridge is known for its extensive trail network), and wildlife corridors. Blacklegged tick presence is well-documented. Tick control is strongly recommended for Uxbridge properties with wooded zones or adjacent to conservation land.

**Brock Township (Cannington, Beaverton):** Northern Durham rural communities. Highest mosquito pressure in the region near wetland and lake areas (Lake Simcoe adjacency). Tick pressure is consistent with moraine-adjacent areas.

## Oak Ridges Moraine Properties

The Oak Ridges Moraine runs east-west through central Durham, creating a distinct ecology in Port Perry, Uxbridge, and surrounding areas. Properties on or adjacent to the moraine have:

- Higher deer and wildlife traffic (primary tick vectors)
- Forested and brushy edges close to residential zones
- Wetland complexes that drive mosquito production
- Higher overall biodiversity and pest pressure than urban south Durham
